Culture emerges from a challenging environment

A cultural centre located within an informal settlement, Rodrigo Bueno, in south-east of Buenos Aires city. Placed next to the Río de La Plata, the project borders an ecological reserve and the luxurious barrio of Puerto Madero.

This project is created as a public space to respond to the socio-economic setting and increase the value of the community by meeting its cultural needs.

The centre is a four-module structure that serves as articulator between the different cultural and natural landscapes. Each volume has a themed approach related to a cultural element of the community. The design is inspired by the block-fragmented distribution of the settlement.

The building can be accessed through an orchard adjacent to the natural reserve where people from the informal settlement can stock up on organic food. Once inside the centre, the first module to be explored is the auditorium, which can also be used as an exhibition room. The second volume is a space for handicrafts sales. The third one was designed for delivering courses and workshops. The last structure is a coffee shop.

The cultural centre, through each of its modules, allows the inclusion and participation of people from Rodrigo Bueno.
